DINNER MEETING
TUESDAY, June 19, 2007

Elephant Bar and Restaurant, 521 Firestone Road, Goleta (SB Airport)

Social Hour at 6:00 p.m., Dinner at 6:30 p.m., and Presentation at 7:30 p.m.

“Ethanol: America’s Home Grown Alternative Fuel”

Speaker:  Dave Baskett, President, American Ethanol, Santa Maria

Ethanol is a clean-burning, high-octane fuel that is produced from renewable sources. Ethanol is grain alcohol produced from crops such as corn. Because it is domestically produced, ethanol helps reduce America's dependence upon foreign sources of energy. Ethanol production and use benefit U.S. agriculture and lead rural economic development. Since it is made primarily from corn and other agricultural products, ethanol increases demand for these crops, increases the prices farmers receive for these crops, and brings economic development opportunity to rural areas where ethanol is made.

Ethanol is a renewable, environmentally friendly fuel that is inherently cleaner than gasoline. Ethanol reduces harmful tailpipe emissions of carbon monoxide, particulate matter, oxides of nitrogen, and other ozone-forming pollutants. Ethanol is used in reformulated gasoline (RFG) as set out in the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. This standard requires an oxygenate, like ethanol, to be added to gasoline to help it burn more completely. Reformulated gasoline is required in areas that violate carbon monoxide and/or ozone quality standards.

David Baskett is president of American Ethanol in Santa Maria.  American Ethanol is in the permit process to build and operate a 110 million gallon a year ethanol plant near Santa Maria.

 DINNER MEETING

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 18, 2007

Ottavio’s Restaurant, 1620 Ventura Blvd., Camarillo

Social Hour at 6:00 p.m., Dinner at 6:30 p.m., and Presentation at 7:30 p.m.

Industrial Ventilation:

A Link Between Occupational Safety & Health, Energy Conservation,

and Environmental Engineering

Speaker:  Kathleen M Paulson, PE, Naval Facilities Engineering Service Center

The primary driver for industrial ventilation is OSHA and fire and other safety regulations.  Because these formerly fugitive emissions are concentrated into a point source they become an environmental issue.  This presentation focuses on design issues inside the building to improve stressor control and collection efficiency potentially reducing the size and energy usage of the industrial ventilation system.  Excellent designs and faux pas will be presented.

Kappy Paulson is a mechanical engineer at NFESC and has worked in this organization for almost 25 years.  She is NAVFAC’s subject matter expert on industrial ventilation. She is a member of the ANSI Z9 Committee in Industrial Ventilation Standards and is Vice Chair of the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists, Industrial Ventilation Committee.  She is also a member of the American Welding Society’s Fume and Gases Subcommittee.

Dinner:  $25 members, $30 non-members, car-poolers save $2; $15 full-time students (sorry, no student carpool discount).  Dinner menu options are: lasagna, baked ziti, sausage and peppers, and chicken marsala (place your order at the meeting with the waiter/waitress).
